Georgia: Better Education Lures Gali Kids to Ganmukhuri Schools
Several ethnic Georgian children living in the Gali region in the breakaway region of Abkhazia attend kindergarten and school in the Georgian region of Samegrelo. Sneaking across the de-facto border guarded by Russian soldiers every morning and afternoon, the children are sometimes accompanied by parents, who often risk hefty fines and questioning by police if caught trying to cross into Georgian-controlled territory.
Parents who take their children into Ganmukhuri for school say that they do so because they feel safer there than in Gali and believe the quality of education is better.
